Is your CV helping you stand out, or is it holding you back?
If your CV isn’t getting noticed, ask yourself this:
Does it show what you’ve achieved — or is it just a list of responsibilities?
I get it — writing about yourself can be hard.
BUT your CV is your chance to show what sets you apart.
I’ve read thousands of CVs in my role as a recruiter and career coach. Even this week, I’ve been reviewing CVs for a role, and many of them read like job descriptions.
Think about your wins – not just your tasks.
Go back through your work history — what projects are you proud of? Where did you solve a problem, change, improve or lead?
Use numbers or outcomes where you can — saved time, increased revenue, improved processes, built teams, hit targets.
Tailor each CV — highlight achievements that are relevant to the role you’re applying for.
Make it easy to read — think about what the reader is looking for. We do still review every CV! A clear layout, good font size, white space and bullet points go a long way.
Cut the fluff — avoid jargon and generic lines like “hard-working team player” unless you can show what that actually meant in action. Review and remove any “word salad” – those extra words that don’t add anything.
Your CV is your chance to market yourself – it’s not a career memoir.
Keep it relevant, results-focused, and readable.
That’s what helps you stand out — be that Unicorn businesses look for.
If you’re not sure where to start – or if your current approach isn’t working to find a job you love – I’m always happy to help.
Whether it’s career coaching, a CV refresh, or a clarity check on your direction, don’t underestimate the value of having someone in your corner.
